DESCRIPTION:
The ultimate Italian road comedy, Il sorpasso stars the unlikely pair of Vittorio Gassman (Big Deal on Madonna Street) and Jean-Louis Trintignant (Z) as, respectively, a waggish, free-wheeling bachelor and the bookish law student he takes on a madcap trip from Rome to rural Southern Italy. An unpredictable journey that careers from slapstick to tragedy, this film, directed by Dino Risi (the original Scent of a Woman), is a wildly entertaining commentary on the pleasures and consequences of the good life. A holy grail of commedia all'italiana, Il sorpasso is so fresh and exciting that one can easily see why it has long been adored in Italy.

5One of the greatest Italian films of the 1960's
By Hannibal
This was and is one of the most unforgettable films of my life. Having lived in Rome for many years both in the sixties and seventies, it accurately captures what life was like for many back then in the spirit of "La Dolce Vita," only more realistically than one saw in the Fellini film.(Of course the American title, "The Easy Life," completely misses the irony of its original Italian one, "Il Sorpasso.")

Vittorio Gassman unleashes his great talent in this film here far more than I ever saw him do on stage, and if for example your Italian is good enough to hear how he mirrors the regional accents of the other characters to make fun of them, in addition to relishing the dialogue of the riotously funny screenplay, you will marvel at true acting virtuosity.

For the rest: Trintignant the perfect foil, and a brilliant cast of character actors, Contini's wonderful cinematography, and last but not least, Dino Risi's superb direction make this one of the truly great films of its time.

Buy it, if you can find it. You'll never forget it!

5It's about time ...
By James M. Shertzer
Dino Risi's work has been woefully underrated and unavailable, particularly in the US, far too long. "Il Sorpasso'' ("The Easy Life") is possibly the best of his films. I saw this tragicomedy (or cometragedy?) in first release in the 1960s, have never forgotten it and have searched in vain for it on video for many years. I think I actually suggested to Criterion some years that they restore and release it ... and now they have! I can't take credit, but I'm sure if enough people request a title they'll look into releasing it. Only thing I DON'T like about Criterion now is they insist on putting a DVD and Blu-Ray disc in the same package. These dual packages don't cost more but I suspect they could lower prices by dropping DVDs altogether. Blu-Ray player prices are so low now everyone can afford them and most movie buffs went to Blu-Ray long ago.

4I liked it up until the ending
By Art Vandelay
The ending seemed to come out of nowhere--and didn't seem to fit with the themes developed up until that point. Maybe I'm missing something. I'd love to hear what the director thought he was trying to say with that ending. It didn't seem to have any connection to the rest of the movie--it was unearned. (And I'm not buying "existentialism" or "seize the day before it seizes you" because those themes were not developed prior to the denouement). Fans of the ending, please explain.
